Hockey was first played in the Busselton District in about 1933. The men and women played in separate competitions, but joined to become the Busselton Hockey Stadium Club in 2000. Since then the number of players has increased and the quality of the fields and facilities has steadily improved.
Busselton Hockey has an excellent home at Bovell Park consisting of an artificial wet surface turf, six high-quality grass fields and a two-storey clubhouse overlooking the whole complex. With a membership of approximately 1000 players, and many more parents, spectators and visitors, the hockey stadium is a busy area every day of the week from mid March until the end of September. The regular hockey season winds down in mid October, concluding with the annual Busselton Masters Carnival, an event that attracts around 35 visiting teams from regional and metropolitan areas.
Since the installation of an international standard playing surface in 1993, we have had visiting teams from countries including: England, Holland, Japan, Thailand, and many more countries. We have hosted both senior and youth teams from every State in Australia during the running of five National Championship events. Recent events include:
The Busselton Hockey Stadium is very pro-active with the promotion of hockey in the region and through our junior development program, we have a qualified hockey mentor who visits primary schools in the Busselton and Margaret River regions to introduce hockey to all children in years 2 and 3. This has proved very successful for both the club and players, with many players being selected into various state teams.
The Busselton Hockey Stadium Club is run by a dedicated Board of Directors, who work tirelessly for the club, and a full time Stadium Manager. We also employ casual canteen, bar and grounds staff as well as a part time junior development officer. Not to mention the many, and highly valued volunteers.
