Lamp Inc. is proud to be an authentic, community-based service, providing mental health support grounded in lived experience.

Our journey began in 1996, when a small group of carers came together to share their experiences and support one another in facing the challenges of mental health. At that time, resources were scarce and services were limited. What started as a peer support group quickly grew into a movement of advocacy and action.

These dedicated carers not only supported each other but built the knowledge required to navigate complex systems, secure support for their loved ones, and campaign for better services for all. Their voices were heard on the steps of Parliament House as they called for fairer services, respect, and recognition. Their determination led to Lamp’s first milestone: a successful submission that secured funding for a staff member dedicated to carer support.

From there, Lamp’s foundation was laid.

In the years that followed, Lamp expanded its reach through partnerships with the Mental Health Commission and other funding bodies. We provided one-on-one support for carers and consumers, and later, with increased funding, delivered tailored mental health education in the community. Persistent advocacy saw Lamp achieve further growth, including the Day-2-Day psychosocial support program funded by WAPHA, new youth and family programs, and the move to larger premises at 226 Bussell Highway.

Today, Lamp continues to thrive, with expanded staff, services, and programs, established to deliver ongoing mental health support to the Southwest community whilst upholding those initial core values. We are, above all, a place of acceptance, dignity, and connection. A place where people feel safe, heard, and understood. A place where the principles of our founding carers still guide us: respect without judgement, support without barriers, and community without exclusion.
