CEO Updates – Progress Report

June 2025

As we wrap up the first half of the year, it’s clear that Busselton’s business community continues to lead with resilience, ambition, and connection. Below is an update on how the Chamber is delivering on our Strategic Growth Plan and continuing to support our members and our region.

1. Local Focus – Listening, Understanding, and Acting
Before I became CEO, or even joined the Board, I entered the BCCI & DYCCI Business Excellence Awards and was delighted to be named a finalist for Aussenskin in an environmental category. That process gave me valuable insight into the Awards, and more importantly, forced me to really evaluate my business plan and pinpoint where improvements were needed. I’d encourage every business to consider entering. And for those who win, there’s the opportunity to progress to the State regional awards.

This month I’ve met with two local sporting clubs to learn more about how they operate, what they’re aiming to achieve, and what challenges they face. These conversations have been valuable and reaffirmed that our sporting and business communities often intersect. If you’re part of a sporting group, I’d love to hear from you—our goal is to understand how the Chamber can support your work.

We’ve also taken action based on feedback from members who asked for more centrally located office spaces with foot traffic. We’ve been in negotiations with the owners of one of the vacant spaces in Fig Tree Lane and are pleased to confirm that small office spaces are now in the works. These will be available through the Chamber soon—stay tuned for more.

2. Leadership – Strengthening Business and Community Growth
The BCCI Board meets monthly and continues to shape our advocacy work through long-term planning and strategic guidance. Our discussions are informed by what we hear from you—our business community—along with insights from City of Busselton Access Sessions (where we have a representative present each month) and the Business Leaders Group.

Housing, workforce shortages, and long-term planning are recurring themes in those discussions. We’re currently gathering expert data and considered contributions to help shape a realistic vision for sustainable growth. If you have something to add—or a perspective you feel is missing—we welcome your voice.

In the spirit of open dialogue, we’ve invited City of Busselton Directors to join our Board meetings. So far, we’ve welcomed Maxine Palmer (Director of Economic and Business Development) and Sarah Pierson (Director of Corporate Strategy and Performance). These discussions are helping strengthen our collaborative efforts.

I also represent the business community on the BDEMP (Business Development, Events, and Marketing Program), a City of Busselton initiative that supports local economic and promotional strategies. We’re currently reviewing the strategic framework to ensure it remains responsive to future growth.

3. Connection – Building Stronger Business Networks
This month I had the privilege of mentoring a local young entrepreneur through the Innovation Cluster’s Future Founders Program, which supports aspiring business owners aged 16–25. It’s a reminder of how important it is to invest in the next generation of business leaders.

We host over 50 events every year—designed for businesses of all sizes and stages. Whether it’s networking, upskilling, or strategy, there’s something for everyone. If you haven’t been along in a while, now’s a good time to reconnect.

We’re currently developing a Local Procurement Event to help businesses better understand how to access local supply chains and win contracts. Keep an eye out for dates.

And while AI is everywhere in conversation, we want to make sure our members feel confident and supported in understanding it. Two events are coming up: a practical workshop with Microsoft and NBN, and an AI Summit in collaboration with Red Head Digital Marketing, featuring expert speakers from across the country.

4. Advocacy – Representing Busselton at the Highest Levels
If you’re facing a challenge and not sure where to turn, the Chamber is here to help. Recently we’ve been supporting several businesses who weren’t being heard or needed help navigating complex issues. If that sounds like you—please reach out. That’s what we’re here for.

I recently attended the WA State Budget Lunch with Premier Roger Cook. We’re actively exploring how Busselton businesses can benefit from the announced funding and initiatives, and how to ensure our region sees its fair share of opportunity.

As always, we’ll continue advocating on your behalf—whether it’s at local, state, or federal level—so that business in Busselton remains strong, future-focused, and supported.
